So here we are the day after Christmas and I'm still listening to the only radio station that continues to play non-stop Christmas music. It's a sickness, I know it. I do just love the Christmas season, I always have and last night I was getting nostalgic (my daughter growing up, memories of family members who aren't with us, watched It's a Wonderful Life, etc), so I went to bed with the Christmas music still playing on our kitchen radio assuming they would stop playing Christmas music at midnight, but they didn't. I woke up this morning to more Christmas music (it's a christmas miracle), which to me is perfect because we're having Christmas dinner today.
My mum was snowed in at her house and we were unable to make it to visit family in Seattle. We're going today. The only sad part in this story is that my mum spent her first Christmas alone in over 45 years. A friend did invite to a dinner, but she declined, choosing a quiet day at home. So as far as I'm concerned and because there are Christmas carols on the radio, Christmas has been postponed until today. It works better for us, my husband had to work yesterday as well (firefighter, there are no holidays off.)
So it was one of my quietest Christmases ever, which was actually pretty wonderful. I didn't think it would feel like Christmas given that I wasn't with my full family, my husband, and it was just my daughter and I, but honestly, I felt I was given the best gift of all by having the whole day (and Christmas even) with my daughter. Because we weren't having our traditional big dinner with our festive paper hats and family, I asked her if she wanted me to set our big table for us to have a more formal dinner and she said, "Let's do dinner in bed." (Our thing is to have breakfast in bed together on Sundays) and I thought, perfect! So we watched Santa Claus is Coming to Town and had Italian Christmas dinner in bed. For dessert, a chocolate cream pie, which we also ate in bed.
I don't know, it just kind of worked out perfectly, like a pre-Christmas to today's Christmas. A break in the middle in movement--I even had the idea to have Christmas dinner every year on the 26th, though I don't think that idea is going to fly with my family. But there we are. I'm on day 3 of Christmas and feeling thankful for the snow as inconvenient as it was, it *was* pretty magical to look out and see it snowing yesterday with our now fire-hazard dead tree lit up (I've now completely unplugged it so it doesn't burst into flames its so dry) and red and green tissue paper everywhere. It was a merry little christmas and to my surprise, I've found that sometimes those can be the nicest ones.
