2 Paragraph Rant--
This was how I felt yesterday when I went to pull up one of my last critical papers for PLU and found it missing. Missing! In my new laptop. HOnestly, I don't know if I blame Sony Vaio or the new MS Vista. After an hour of all most tears, searching files (to see if it was saved under another name), I called a poet friend with a techie husband who said, "Come over, we'll find it!" Before I left, I rebooted my computer to back up my thesis and newest essay before I left and there it was again, the missing document was on my computer. I have no idea what happened.
If I didn't trust my ability with computers, I'd have blamed myself, but there was no way that I just "missed" this file, it was coming up as a "shortcut" and not a word file. Anyway, it has returned. It has been saved, backed up, emailed to others so there are copies of my thesis and final essays all over the place. Lesson learned: back up your files-- more than once a year.
