I had to laugh. I received my official Academy of American Poets newsletter and it reads:
On April 11, 2007, The Academy of American Poets will present a star-studded celebration of American poetry. A gala event, tickets on sale now.
But what's funny is that there are no poets involved with this event, just famous people like Lauren Bacall, Ethan Hawke and Glenn Close. Other artsy famous people to, but no poets. Is it because the Academy of American Poets think if there were real poets there, no one would come? Could they be correct?! I know there are some terrific poets who are not so terrific readers. But not one poet, not even the Poet Laureate?
Who knew the key to a fundraising poetry gala event was no poets. Apparently the poetry world is better loved (and funded) without us! See you in the audience...or not.
