Notes from a Small Town--
We had a windstorm last night and most of our town lost power. We didn't, which was odd. Normally, someone just needs to sneeze and we lose power. This morning I went for a walk and much of the neighborhood smelled like Christmas, huge branches of pine trees scattered across the road. There was even frost this morning on the pumpkins and hay. Coming home, it looked as if the mountains received their first dusting of snow. Towards the islands, I could see a fog bank dropped between land. But above, the sky was that perfect blue autumn sky with the hint of winter, the hint that things are changing. I watched the seagulls circle the crown of fishing boats across the water. The ferry docked then returned to its path from here to there from there to here.
Poetry--
Remember to read Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven tonight or tomorrow in celebration of Halloween. Or watch the The Simpsons version of The Raven, which has one of my very favorite lines from Bart when he asks, "Do you know what would have been scarier than nothing?"
