Assignment: Write a letter to God. Have Her/Him respond.
After Thirty-Nine Years, the Child Readdresses the Parent
Dear Father,
I’m writing to explain my bad behavior.
My unlikely resistance to love.
There’s a foreign language
of semi-automatic weapons I’ve tried
to understand, an unstoppable
reign, but I’m asking
where do I find compassion
and why does my hairspray clog after one use.
It may be necessary to sleep
against a tombstone to understand
the difference between now
and then, but I’m listening. While I balance
my checkbook, I’m listening to anything
you have to say.
