Study in Snow

The weather changed and snow
covered the arena, the horses
spooked by the snow sliding
down the roof were taken to the barns.

The weather changes and the tulips
froze, the cherry blossoms wilted
on the branches.

And we cursed the weatherman,
and we cursed a spring that forgot
to appear. And we wondered

if we were approaching our own
ice age, if these were the last days
of the rest of our lives. And the children

built snow rabbits, and the adults
made hot chocolate, and we wondered
if we should be afraid, but instead
we put on our boots and wandered outside.
